Monday update 30/08/10

August 28th, 2010

Congratulations to Josie Mudgeway who shot a hole in one on the 14th hole at St Andrews in Hamilton at the Masters Tournament on 23/08/10.

Another small factoid from my trunk of trivia: Chance of an amateur getting a hole in one: 1 in 12750, or chance of a PGA tour pro: 1 in 3756 (sourced from Golf Digest 1999) count those numbers up against the rounds you’ve played… better odds than lotto!

We have lost touch with a few trophies over the years. If you think you may have one sitting around – please bring it back to the club. We would also be appreciative if you are feeling club spirited and wish to donate a trophy to fill in the gaps. Please see Claire or Shaun if you are interested.

A reminder about the Lions collection tin: if you have any old style NZ coins or surplus foreign money you can drop it to the collection tin in the office. Thank you to those who have been bringing in jars for the marmalade, please bring in the smaller jars and not the larger Dolmio type jar.

Hey good looking. Yes you! Come on down to our Fun fashion night on Wednesday 13th October. Tickets are $20 and are available from the office.

Monday Update 16/08/10

August 16th, 2010

Due to the weather on Saturday the Colbeck and Darby semi final has been postponed until this Saturday (21/08) and the final will be played on the 28th August (the same day as the first round of the Dunlop Cup)

Put next Thursday aside for our Monthly Midweek Open. Despite the weather the course is playing well and this is an excellent opportunity to bring a friend golfing and show off our great course for only $20 and the chance to win prizes!

How about some golf trivia? So they say… 80% of golfers will never have a handicap under 18. How far down this list have you been? Bogey 1 over par, Par even, Birdie -1, Eagle -2, Albatross -3, Condor -4 and finally, Ostrich -5 (which would be a hole in one on a par 6!) Hear of a Sabbath stick? In response to the discouragement of playing golf on Sundays in the late 19th century a Sabbath stick was disguised as a walking stick with the club fitting into the palm of your hand – you merely turned the stick around for a sneaky swing or two.

Women’s 18 hole net scramble results from 17/08: B Todd 72, P Dawson 73

Women’s 9 hole stbfd scramble 17/08: S Wallace 9, P Fitzgerald 7

Friday Update 13/08/10

August 13th, 2010

Had a touch of triskaidekaphobia lately? (that’s a fear of the number 13) If so, I hope you are not suffering from friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia today, because if you were you would have a fear of Friday the 13th. If you really wanted to try your luck you could play a round at Superstition Springs golf club in Arizona, I wonder how many they have on their course today?

Here are a few golfing superstitions to keep your phobia button tuned to maximum anxiety: If you take a golf club out of your bag don’t change your mind and pick another club. Be extra careful when playing the 13th hole. Carry an acorn to improve your game. Never approach the tee from the front. If you are having a good round do not clean your ball. Start your round before 12pm for the best luck. Use ball number 3 or 5 and aim the number towards the hole. I’m sure you have your own superstitions and if not you can buy your acorn from the golf shop (priced according to your last score)

News from the course: Rod and Ean have been hard at work unblocking the drain on the 7th, so no more soggy puddles to wade through. Hopefully you have been appreciating the hard work that is being done to improve the drainage, despite the rain the course has been playing very well.

Men’s stableford scramble results from 07/08: S Lamb 43, M O’Hara 42

Women’s 18 hole nett scramble results from 10/08: A Hill 72, S Brice 75

Women’s 9 hole gross scramble results from  10/08: M McFarlane 60, M Sommerville 67

Upcoming events:

Thurs 26th August – Midweek open, $20 entry & optional $2 for 2’s, tee off 9:30 – 12pm

Sun 26th Sept – Daylight saving starts

Sat 23rd Oct – Machinery Tournament

Oct – Nov – Fire fundraising day – date to be confirmed

Fri 5th Nov – Stockies and Cockies

Sat 13th & Sun 14th November – Men’s 54 Hole and Women’s 54 Hole Tournament

It is as simple as clicking the ‘events’ tab, then selecting ‘club events’ and no matter where in the country you want to play you can see upcoming events. You can even search for competition results.
