Weekly Update 27/06/16

Oooo it’s been a dreary wet week but a few days of sun should sort the course out! Of course you can come down and pick up some books from the clubhouse for your winter reading if you find it too wet for golf.

A bit thank you to our Patron Rodney Price and Mike Whiteman for giving the clubhouse a well needed waterblasting.

Preparations are underway for tournaments and events for later in the year, keep and eye out and gather some mates to make these events a winner for your club. – next tournament – Mon 4th July, Countdown Mixed Open Tournament, 10am shotgun start, $20 entry, start sheet is in the office.

President’s Winter Newsletter

Maramarua Golf Club Winter Newsletter June 2016

Dear Members,
Since my last newsletter in April we have finally been able to complete the sale of the section and refinance accordingly. The Board has worked with the ASB and has reduced our Mortgage payment somewhat but finances remain tight. There will be a fundraising raffle with travel vouchers as prizes coming shortly.

We thank Peter and Avril Thomson for managing the marketing and sale of the section through Trademe. They spent plenty of time showing people around the site and answered many questions. Thank you.

Avril has resigned from her role of Junior Convenor and we are now asking whether there is anyone keen to spend time with the juniors. Currently they meet once a month on a Saturday with coaching by Keven from Kaye Maxwells Golf. The Club has received funding from Youthtown for this expense. If anyone is keen either in the current format or some other that may suit you better please contact Claire, Sue or Wayne. Thanks to Avril for her time and energy spent on the Juniors over the years.

As you may be aware, NZTA have confirmed the upgrade and realignment of State Highway 2 (again) and our property will be affected slightly with the current proposal changing our entrance(again) and slicing a piece of land off the entrance/9th green area and down the fairway a short distance. It is not a great deal but will have some impact on the green and of course our entry from the road. The road from the underpass becomes the alternative secondary road through to Maramarua etc while SH 2 goes off through the farmland to the North of the current Highway.

The course continues to be in great condition and there are plenty of good scores out there. Thanks to Green keeper Tony and his band of workers and volunteers. Pixie Bunn one of our keen 9 Hole Ladies scored two 2s in her last game and Helen Lynd recently holed out at the 14th. Congratulations to the Matchplay Champions for 2016 – Ladies Silver Pam Price, Bronze 1 Barbara Todd, Bronze 2 Helen Lynd and 9 Hole Carol Henry; Men Senior: Murray O’Hara, Intermediate: Kelvin Rambaud, Junior: Phil Sue, C Grade: Andre Ruiterman, and the recent Top Dog winners, Paul Timinis and Tim Herbert.
We have a plea from Course Convenor, Graham and Tony, would you please avoid taking trundlers and carts on the fringe and apron of the greens during the winter months so that wear and tear is kept to a minimum over this wet season.

Both Match and Course Committees have met recently and discussed their issues. It should be noted that players do not have the right to change pin placements or tee blocks as they see fit. The course is set up by our Course Convenor and must be played as presented. By all means talk through any issues with the Course or Match Convenors but please play it as it is set up.

There is a Countdown sponsored Tournament on Monday 4th July. Entries to the office for a 10 00 am Shotgun start.
The Annual 54 Hole Tournament is scheduled for 5th – 6th November. Again entries to the office and get the earlybird price of $75 including lunch..

We are doing a flyer drop in Pokeno to try and attract some of the new residents there. Wayne Evans and Garry Cox could do with some active walkers to help distribute the information around the village.

Health and Safety Regulations are becoming increasingly important around our Club and Course. The outside stairs are being assessed and any safety issues addressed. A reminder to visitors to the course, other than for golf, please sign in and wear a High Vis vest available at the office. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to take on the responsibility of Health and Safety issues for the Club?

As you all know our AGM takes place in early December and members are asked to think about taking on a position on the Board or one of the committees and contributing to the Clubs future.

Good golfing

Sue Brice, President
